Gnome Developer

Hi all, this is my first post as a Gnome Developer. Last week i had requested a CVS account to the gnome.org repository and it was approved yesterday. Thanks to Jody Goldberg that sponsored me, now i have commit rights to the repository. I will try to help the better way and i hope not create a mess over there. :)

For this moment, i am colaborating with three projects, two of them are directly related to the Maemo platform that are the ports 2 applications (Gnumeric and Evince) to the environment that will be used by Nokia 770. The other is a dialog that is part of Gnumeric, and soon will be incorporated by libgoffice that shows all the document information. I will post some screenshots of the result here as i commit the code.

Is the Maemo port of Gnumeric going well? It will be really great to see any screen captures of that, and of Evince (beyond what was shown in May).

Good luck!

Hi roger! Actually, the gnumeric port is done, i have submitted a patch some time ago and now i am waiting to have it merged upstream. We have it running since June when we started our work with 1.4.3 version. So you can see some screen captures in http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnumeric-list/2005-June/msg00017.html

Our objective is to port the applications and have all the code merged to CVS head of each project. Right now, i am starting the port of the last Evince version.

Regards, Etrunko.

Thanks! I knew about the port but I wasn't sure if it was done, and I had never seen any shots of it. I'm glad things are progressing so well.

And soon we'll see the devices, yes!?

I am as anxious as most people are. Nokia has promissed the device for the third quarter, so we expect it will be available by the end of this month. :)

Yes, we all hope they live up to that promise :-)

I've put some of this info in the Internet Tablet Users blog, at http://internettablettalk.com/blog

Is etrunko a nickname for Eduardo? Is that how you would prefer to be called? Or is it just a "screen name"?

Hi roger, i had seen the post at Internet Tablet Users blog and i'd like to thank you for publishing the information. It is a way to make our work more visible to the community. :)

And about "etrunko", yes, it is my nickname, and it is the one i use in IRC channels, but i do not have any special preference of which one you could use. Maybe the one that sounds better. ;)

Best Regards, Eduardo (etrunko).

Hi, etrunko!

Can the Gnumeric port to Maemo open a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet?

Was wondering this, and then someone on the developer list asked too. And I realized I knew someone who could answer this question -- you!

While I'm here, I should ask if you know whether the port of Abi Word can open a Microsoft Word document. And if it can open an OpenOffice Writer document.

Thanks for any information you can provide!

Hi Roger! It is interesting to notice that all the ports made to the maemo platform will do exactly what the original program does. They are basically UI adjustments to fit the 770 reduced screen.

So, the Maemo Gnumeric version will open Microsoft Excel spreadsheets the original gnumeric does. :) This applies to Abiword and Microsof Word documents too.

About the OpenOffice documents, we have here in INdT office people working on importer and exporter plugins for Abiword and Gnumeric, that will make these two programs able to open and write documents and spreadsheets using the OpenDocument standard. We hope to have they done by the end of this year.

I hope to have answered your questions. Best Regards, etrunko.

Thank you for answering these questions. Once the devices are in people's hands, there won't be so many questions.

I took the liberty of posting this information at the Internet Tablet Users blog, because I believe others will be interested in knowing this information too.

Thanks,

Roger
