Xournal Package for IT2006

Restarting the port of applications to Maemo 2.0, I have decided to start from the easiest one in order to get contact with the new Hildon API. So I present you the Xournal package for IT2006.

To try it, add the following entry to your application manager:

  • Web Address: http://bgran.net/etrunko/apt

  • Distribution: mistral

  • Components: user

The performance has improved a *lot* since the package built for the IT2005. As usual, building the debian package took longer than hacking the code itself. It still depends on libgnomeprintui which will be downloaded automatically from the same repository.

All source and -dev packages are also available in the repository. If you want to try hacking on the source code add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list inside the scratchbox (i386 and armel) environment:

deb http://bgran.net/etrunko/apt mistral user
deb-src http://bgran.net/etrunko/apt mistral user

Have Fun!

P.S.: I apologize for my awful handwriting ;).

UPDATE:
For those who are missing libglade dependency, please add the maemo repository entry to you application manager:

Web Address: http://repository.maemo.org
Distribution: mistral
Components: free non-free

kudos! Eduado, I have been waiting for this. I was going to try out hacking it myself but thanks.

Hate to bother you again, it seems libglade is missing so i can't install it.

I'm having the same issue. Specifically, it needs libglade2-0 >= 1.2.3.6

I had to use http://www.bgran.net/etrunko/apt instead of http://bgran.net/etrunko/apt to get it working with application manager. It seems to be fine, no problems with libglades or anything that I can find. Thanks!

Eduardo,

Thank you. You did an excellent job. Xournal for IT2006 is very responsive, easy to use. I used link you provided and installed it without any problem. This is one of my favor applications.

By the way, do you have any plan to port Gnumeric? I appreciate it very much if you can port the gnumeric when you have time.

hello - I just purchased the 770 and I am trying to install your software but I have no idea how to do it. Can you please provide step by step instructions? Thanks.

I installed Xournal for IT2006. There is a rather crippling problem when I tried to use it. The more I draw in Xournal, the slower it becomes to respond. Eventually, it gets to the point where a line appears a dozen or more seconds after I drew it.

For the person who needs help installing:

First you may want to get rid of your anonymous identity.

Do this:

From main screen, goto

Tools-->Application Manager

in app manager go to the menu and do:

Tools-->Application Catalog

On the dialog window you click the 'new' button and enter the follow:

# Web Address:
http://bgran.net/etrunko/apt
# Distribution: mistral
# Components: user

You may also need to add the following:

Web Address: http://repository.maemo.org
Distribution: mistral
Components: free non-free

After you'r done, xornal should show up on the list of available apps, then you can highlite it and click 'install' at the bottom.

Hope this helps.

Hey,
I notice the option to annotate a pdf appears to be grayed out. Is there any way of enabling this ?

Thanks

Hi, to enable the option to annotate pdf files, we need the poppler libraries installed.

At this time we don't have a package for it yet. Next week, I'm releasing xournal 0.3.1 with this feature enabled ok?

Best Regards, Etrunko.

Hey, that's great, thanks a million.

PDF annotation,
I've tried xournal 0.3.1 on a Nokia 770, OS 2006. I was especially interested in the feature to use a pdf as background, such that I could
annotate it. Unfortunately this failed either in converting the pdf to ppm, indicating
an error message that it cannot convert. Or for a few seconds the taskbar showed substantial CPU activity, thereafter the CPU load decreased again. I assume that at this point the conversion of the pdf to ppm should have been done. But still the pdf did not show up. Any hint what could have gone wrong.

you can contact me at thomas dot deiss at imail dot de

(thanks for the fine work anyway)

Hi,

I've just fixed this bug. I'm uploading the package at this very moment. Thank you for reporting.

PDF annotation,
Two examples that did not work before (with different failing behaviour) are working now. This is just to support that the bug has been fixed.
Thanks for the quick reaction.

Good to know it is now fixed. I've tried some files and I must warn you Xournal eats lots of memory in some cases, for example an issue of TUX Magazine.

Best, Etrunko.

Hi Etrunko,

I've tried xournal and the "export to pdf" feature with this randomly chosen pdf:

http://www.tdx.cbuc.es/TESIS_UPC/AVAILABLE/TDX-0303105-155330//10Djg10de14.pdf

But the resulting file is just the overlay, it does not save the original PDF merged with xournal's overlay :_/

I've also tried to check the "Attach file to the journal" checkbox when opening the PDF from "Annotate PDF", with the same results.

The PC version of xournal merges both nicely instead...

Thanks for your nice port to maemo anyway ;-)

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the bug and apologizes for the long time without answering. I'll take a look on this as soon as I have some free time... It's been too busy here these days.

Best Regards, Etrunko.

thanks. i am using this for my lecture notes. it works great.

Awsome! I scanned pages from a book I'm reading into pdf files. The built in pdf viewer would not open them (out of memory error.)
Xournal opens them with no problems! And I can highlight the page as a book marker.
Great little program.
Thanks.

I just installed this on my 770 and tried it for a few minutes, and it looks like it's exactly what I was looking for to take notes! Thanks a bunch for making a decent port and not just a recompile :D

Eduardo, looks like this might be exactly what I need.... having an issue though; I installed it on the N800 and the "ink" is transparent... any suggestions ? TX !!

Ernesto de Bernardis said...

Eduardo, will you port it to OS 2008?
